NABC 2019 Film Festival Overview

NABC 2019 brings you a bouquet of films ranging from the latest blockbusters to critically acclaimed films, while also honoring a  prolific filmmaker of our time.

Spanning over three days, the festival will have three main strands.

  • The latest from Tollywood – from the blockbusters to the arthouse favorites.
  • Retrospective of a filmmaker who has exemplified story telling through films - the eminent filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly
  • “Chotochobi” (ছোটছবি)- A competition of Bengali shorts

Kaushik Ganguly

Kaushik Ganguly is a film director, screenwriter and actor who needs no introduction to the Bengali audience. Over a career that spans over almost twenty-five years, he has captivated the audience with his poignant works that explore various social issues. Son of the noted instrumentalist Sunil Ganguly, he attended Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur and later Jadavpur University, where he worked on a degree in Bengali literature. At JU, he started a theater group with his future wife and noted actress Churni Ganguly and Suman Mukhopadhyay (who would later become a film director). In 1987, Kaushik began working as a screenwriter at Tollywood. In 1995, he moved to ETV Bangla to direct telefilms like Ushnatar Janye, Ulka and Atithi which tackled erstwhile taboo subjects like lesbianism and sex determination. Kaushik has won numerous national awards including: Chotoder Chobi (2014), which won the Best Film on Social Issues;  Shabdo (2012), which won the 60th National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Bengali; Apur Panchali (2013), which won the best director award; and Bishorjon (2017), which bagged the Best Bengali Film award. His films have also enthralled international audience and have been shown at Dubai International Film Festival, Tongues on Fire Film Festival, and at Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema.
